NZ pushes forward opposition to Japan's whaling plan

WELLINGTON, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Anti-whaling nations, led by New Zealand and Australia, will continue to fight against Japan on expanding kills of the giant mammals, local media said Wednesday.

Conservation Minister Chris Carter was quoted by NZ National Radio as saying that voting down Japan's whaling proposal at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) Tuesday in South Korea was a "resounding defeat and Japan had lost face."

The IWC member countries had narrowly voted against Japan's proposal, 30-27, despite Japan's confidence it would win. Japan proposed a secret vote.

Carter said he understood the Japanese wants to add 80 of each of hampbackand fin whales to its legal kill lists.

Japan is also asking to double its kill of about 440 minke whales a year for so-called scientific purposes.

Carter, who is now attending the week-long IWC meeting, said New Zealand is fighting the proposal on a number of counts, and taking a case to the World Court is one option.

New Zealand is worried that Japan's proposal to kill more whales was a threat to its 120 million NZ dollars (85 million US dollars) whale-watching industry.

Carter said whaling was unpopular even in Japan and its " intensively provocative" proposal was extreme.

New Zealand would never countenance any form of whaling, said Carter.
